& Grant Opportunities
for Educators
The ASM Materials Education Foundation annually awards 20 grants of $500 each to help K-12 teachers bring the real world of materials science into their classrooms. “Living in a Material World” grants recognize creativity and enhance awareness of materials science and the role that materials play in society. The ASM Foundation is committed to working with and supporting teachers through “Living in a Material World” K-12 teacher grants. Application Process Describe a hands-on, curriculum-based K-12 project that involves student observation, teamwork, mathematics, and science skills that enhance student awareness of the everyday materials around them. We encourage you to contact local ASM International chapter members for assistance in creating imaginative, original projects that other teachers will want to emulate. The ASM Materials Education Foundation has been delighted to receive many more proposals than can be funded. To speed the selection process, ONLY those proposals directly addressing materials science will be considered. Proposals will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Action in Education Committee. Please Note: A one-page summary report is required for each of the winning proposals upon completion of the project. Application Deadline: May 25 Any applications received after the deadline will be considered in next year’s cycle. Results will be communicated to the applicants in early August. Program for Colorado Teachers:
Our professional learning program is an intensive, highly supportive program designed to prepare educators to provide high quality computer science instruction. The 2021-22 programs will be virtual. The program includes:
Option 1: Apply for a scholarship. Do you teach in a high needs school, or a school with a diverse student population? Is funding for computer science limited in your district? We have limited scholarships available for teachers in Colorado. Our scholarships cover the full $1,500 program fee. Option 2: Check for state funding through the Colorado Department of Education CS Grant opportunity! Use the CDE CS grant to fund participation in the 2021-22 program. Check out information about the grant here: CS Teacher Education Grant and CS Education Grant. New: Connect with your district administrators to explore using ESSER funding for CS PD! Option 3: Pay $1,500 per teacher through your school or district. That’s 50% off the national cost thanks to our generous supporters: The Morgridge Family Foundation and Code.org. Check with your school or districts to see if PD funds are available. Please Note:

After our recent experiences in Hong Kong, I've got the travel bug and have been searching for other opportunities to travel, to observe/experience education abroad, and to build connections between my students and global partners. In my searching, I came across two different opportunities through Fulbright that seem promising. I was already familiar with Fulbright's distinguished programs for college graduates (Teaching Assistantships, English Teaching Positions and Research Assistantships) and for teacher exchange. While these well-known programs provide amazing opportunities to travel, study and teach abroad, the assistantships are restricted to recent grads...and I'd been under the impression that the teacher exchange required a commitment for an extended stay abroad with housing exchange, which can be challenging for many educators (including this one that still rents her abode). In fact, Fulbright also offers short-term global opportunities through the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term Program and the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program.
