Professional Development
& Grant Opportunities
for Educators
If you've ever had the opportunity to visit San Francisco's Exploratorium, you're familiar with the sensory-rich, hands-on opportunities to explore, investigate and tinker. After hearing from a friend and colleague about her experiences at the Exploratorium's Summer Institute for Teachers, it's been my dream to participate. Unfortunately, my schedule this summer doesn't mesh with their program dates....but perhaps you'll be luckier than me! Program Details Program Dates: June 18 to July 6, 2018 Application Deadline: March 16, 2018. The Exploratorium will notify applicants of their status soon thereafter. Program Description (from the Exploratorium's website): Join us each summer for three weeks of nonstop science exploration. During the institutes, teachers work with each other and with staff scientists and educators to learn more about science teaching. They will introduce you to the museum’s exhibits, the foundation of our teaching programs, and will also lead activities and model pedagogical skills that will help relay science concepts to your students. Together, we will carry out hands-on investigations of natural phenomena and highlight how they relate to human perception, physical science, life science, earth science, and mathematics. Many of our investigations will help you bring the NGSS into your curriculum. Each day includes class instruction as well as independent project and research work. In the afternoon, you can select from a menu of mini-workshop topics, create small versions of Exploratorium exhibits in the machine shop, and meet with Teacher Institute staff to focus on your specific needs. Cost: Free tuition. Teachers must provide own lodging, food and transportation. The Exploratorium provides a $2500 stipend for teachers who complete the 3-week institute.
Who Can Apply? Current secondary science teachers with 3+ years experience. Questions? Email teacherinstitute@exploratorium.edu
