& Grant Opportunities
for Educators
Funded by the Department of Defense, Cyber-REACH (Research Education Adventures for Community College and High School Students) will provide a basis of knowledge in deep-learning, machine-learning, and cybersecurity research. In summary, ~50 high school teachers who will each invite four students to participate in the following activities. Now accepting registration for a second cohort of teachers.
Program Expectations:
Teachers will be eligible for stipends between $360 and $600 depending on the number of participants. Suggested student pre-requisites: *Students should have successfully completed or are in the process of completing an introductory CS course, such as CS Discoveries or AP CSP. *Students should have basic programming skills, ideally in Python. Although students can learn Python while they are practicing the labs or after the initial workshops. *We recommend that students know some basic Linux commands, but again this is something that students can learn after the workshops. CEA CoPilot offers year-round online and in-person professional development courses for educators, covering a broad range of topics. CEA members can take courses through CoPilot for discounted rates, and receive an additional discount for a course that meets the new Colorado educator requirements for supporting ELL literacy. Both courses that I have taken (Novel Engineering with Jess Noffsinger in Spring 2021 and Problem-Based Learning with Emily Schreiner & Anne Eden in Fall 2017) have been excellent, with strategies that I could immediately transfer to my own classroom. This week-long, hands-on lab experience shows educators how to use applied engineering techniques in their classroom. ASM Materials Camp®-Teachers is an idea-generating workshop introducing teachers to methods that make math and core science principles more enticing and relevant to their middle and high school students. Materials topics are great motivators in any engineering, technology or science course as students learn concepts that are reflected in their everyday lives.
Who Should Attend?
The ASM Materials Education Foundation annually awards 20 grants of $500 each to help K-12 teachers bring the real world of materials science into their classrooms. “Living in a Material World” grants recognize creativity and enhance awareness of materials science and the role that materials play in society. The ASM Foundation is committed to working with and supporting teachers through “Living in a Material World” K-12 teacher grants. Application Process Describe a hands-on, curriculum-based K-12 project that involves student observation, teamwork, mathematics, and science skills that enhance student awareness of the everyday materials around them. We encourage you to contact local ASM International chapter members for assistance in creating imaginative, original projects that other teachers will want to emulate. The ASM Materials Education Foundation has been delighted to receive many more proposals than can be funded. To speed the selection process, ONLY those proposals directly addressing materials science will be considered. Proposals will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Action in Education Committee. Please Note: A one-page summary report is required for each of the winning proposals upon completion of the project. Application Deadline: May 25 Any applications received after the deadline will be considered in next year’s cycle. Results will be communicated to the applicants in early August. Contact Jeane Deatherage, Administrator, Foundation Programs, or call 440-338-5433 The National Fluid Power Association offers annual $500 grants for teachers to purchase materials for their classes to learn about Fluid Power and/or participate in the Fluid Power Action Challenge. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
$10 Virtual Workshops are back!! Our partners at the CREATE Center were so happy with the results of the first round of KidWind Virtual Workshops they have come back and funded a pile more educator scholarships.
If you are a 6-12th grade science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) teacher use the coupon code, CREATE2021, and it will reduce your registration fee to ONLY $10! That saves you $140! These 6-hour fully virtual workshops are hands-on and focus on delivering just enough content knowledge to get going, as well as a wide variety of practical activities for your classroom. If you manage to take attend and complete all three of workshops - Energy & The Power Grid, Wind Energy Fundamentals and Solar Energy Fundamentals and attend an educators webinar on successful implementation you will receive $200 in bonus gear that you get to choose! No prior energy knowledge is needed to attend these workshops. All participants receive a box of materials before each workshop that will allow them to explore the lessons. AIAA awards grants of up to $500 to worthy projects that significantly influence student learning related to aerospace.

expectations for engagement, innovation and relevancy to my own practice...and they did not disappoint! After completing the course, I blogged about my experience as I wanted to share their resources with the world! Prior to the course, I had been familiar with the Maker Movement, but I was completely unaware of what "tinkering" was. Nearly four years later, I've utilized the ideas from that one class in multiple settings ranging from my AP Physics 2 class (creating soft circuits) to my conceptual physics classes (reverse engineering, creating block circuits) to a middle school summer engineering camp (making automata to explore mechanical engineering). The Exploratorium offers 3 courses through Coursera, and one just started last week...meaning there's still time to dive in and join the Tinkering community! Current Course Offering: (Ends March 26) Other Course Offerings (Stay tuned for next enrollment period):
If you've ever had the opportunity to visit San Francisco's Exploratorium, you're familiar with the sensory-rich, hands-on opportunities to explore, investigate and tinker. After hearing from a friend and colleague about her experiences at the Exploratorium's Summer Institute for Teachers, it's been my dream to participate. Unfortunately, my schedule this summer doesn't mesh with their program dates....but perhaps you'll be luckier than me! Program Details Program Dates: June 18 to July 6, 2018 Application Deadline: March 16, 2018. The Exploratorium will notify applicants of their status soon thereafter. Program Description (from the Exploratorium's website): Join us each summer for three weeks of nonstop science exploration. During the institutes, teachers work with each other and with staff scientists and educators to learn more about science teaching. They will introduce you to the museum’s exhibits, the foundation of our teaching programs, and will also lead activities and model pedagogical skills that will help relay science concepts to your students. Together, we will carry out hands-on investigations of natural phenomena and highlight how they relate to human perception, physical science, life science, earth science, and mathematics. Many of our investigations will help you bring the NGSS into your curriculum. Each day includes class instruction as well as independent project and research work. In the afternoon, you can select from a menu of mini-workshop topics, create small versions of Exploratorium exhibits in the machine shop, and meet with Teacher Institute staff to focus on your specific needs. Cost: Free tuition. Teachers must provide own lodging, food and transportation. The Exploratorium provides a $2500 stipend for teachers who complete the 3-week institute.
Who Can Apply? Current secondary science teachers with 3+ years experience. Questions? Email teacherinstitute@exploratorium.edu
